Yuan blue-and-white features multi-layered glaze and nine layers of decorative patterns.
The cobalt blue is bright and rich.
The vivid, intense cobalt shows small slightly sunken black crystalline spots and diffusion marks on the body.
The rust-colored specks are due to the iron content in the Sumali cobalt pigment.
The body is thick, heavy, and hard, with jointed construction.
The black crystalline material in the clay body is iron oxide.
The foot rim exposes the clay, with angled kiln-red traces and diagonal trimming marks.
Wood-firing produces “sesame-seed” speckles.
